THE GERMAN GYMNASIUM,
KINGS CROSS
Get the "wow feeling" by looking up in Kings Cross. The German Gymnasium is the huge, newly opened restaurant from Sir Terrence Conran - with German and central European dishes on its menu. As important as the food, you may say that it is the building itself that is the main attraction. Originally built by the German community in London in 1865 as a Gymnasium for the gymnastics, the building housed the indoor events of the first Olympic Games in London in 1866.
The D&D restaurant group bought the Mid Victorian building and has completely "gutted" the building, exposing the fantastic wooden ceiling and giving you that WOW feeling. When entering the restaurant the entrance opens up to the large open ground floor with the Meister Bar along one side and the Brassiere seating area in the other.
Once seated at your table, you cannot stop admiring the beautiful wooden ceiling way above you. A Staircase leads you up to the Mezzanine fine Dining area around the edges of the room. Here is also pre-dinner bar.
Its heritage has now been revived by the German Head Chef. with all the classic dishes like Schnitzel and apple strudel. For more elegant cuisine, climb the stairs to the fine dining section of the restaurant.
The Gymnasium is a great place to visit, especially the open all day Brassiere, with its relaxed atmosphere and the breathtaking building. But there is also the lively crowd at the bar in the evening.
The Kings Cross area of London is more than the just the train station, and has undergone a fantastic development. so don't forget to stroll around the area after your meal.
